Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months, you’ll be more than aware that AI is the new buzz word in town. Many believe it has opened up pandora’s box, and we are without doubt witnessing a race to get to the digital version of the Klondyke, and all the promises it holds.
Either way, we can’t ignore it, and in the creative world the harnessing of AI is moving faster than anything I can recall in my 30 year career as a professional creative. We have been using AI processes at Domeble for quite some time now, from keyword building direct from images to visual searching, that enables a drag and drop image search that returns similar images to that which you have used for your search, but we are very excited by the new generative fill feature launched in the recent photoshop beta version.
So what does it do? In its simplest form you could argue that it’s just a content aware development, but in reality it is an immensely powerful process that uses deep neural networks to analyse an image and synthesise a new set of pixels. It can be used to extend or expand an image canvas, or it can remove unwanted objects in an image, or it can totally replace a background with amazing depth of field accuracy, and more and more and more and more.
So much more in fact, that it is really down to the creative involved to unleash the power of their imagination. For myself personally speaking, whilst being amazed by the technology and the accuracy of the content generation, its much more than the “wow look at that” cliche, it’s the sheer speed of the process and the iterative possibilities of creating something.
We have done several tests in-house here at Domeble, and it is the time saving opportunities to a creative workflow that we are most impressed by.It opens up so many possibilities to the images in our collection, and offers our clients so much more creative freedom when using our CGI backplates for campaigns and product development, and when collectively paired with our dynamically rich high-resolution 360° HDRIs, it is a formidable companion to the creative process.
I am anticipating some spectacular automotive images being developed, with fleet shots becoming much easier to produce, and for those horrible super wide image formats that we know will be asked for to fill some crazy 8:1 aspect ratio, life just got a whole lot easier.I can only marvel at the creative opportunities that AI is presenting us, but it also saddens me a little as well.
For creatives like myself, who have been around the block a few times and honed our craft to truly understand the beauty of light and shade, perspective, and composition, there will no doubt be a little nostalgic sadness that things are changing. Having said that however, we have entered into a new era of image creation, and it is exciting as much as it is terrifying to think where this is going, and I for one will be jumping on that runaway train to the Klondyke.
